Country fully united on Kashmir, says Vajpayee
New Delhi, Nov. 27. Rejecting Pakistan's charge that India is divided in
its approach on Kashmir, the Prime Minister, Mr. Atal Behari Vajpayee,
today reaffirmed the Government's commitment to peaceful relations with
its neighbour while insisting that there was no question of accepting
another partition of the country and handing over Jammu and Kashmir to
Pakistan.

Slip-up over portfolio
New Delhi, Nov. 27. It was a pregnant pause right in the beginning of his
reply - and an embarrassing one. As the Prime Minister, Mr. Atal Behari
Vajpayee, rose to reply to a discussion in the Rajya Sabha, he seemed to
forget what portfolio Mr. Jaswant Singh held.

Cong., SP cautious on Opposition unity
New Delhi, Nov. 27. A day after they broke bread together, for the first
time in recent memory, the Congress and the Samajwadi Party, preferred a
cautious approach on Opposition unity, although Mr. Somnath Chatterjee of
the CPI(M), who hosted the dinner on Monday, held out the hope of an
expanding relationship, extending perhaps even to Uttar Pradesh.

BJP to cash in on textbooks row
New Ddelhi, Nov. 27. The ``saffronisation'' of textbooks controversy
raised by the Opposition parties has been seized upon by the Bharatiya
Janata Party as an encashable electoral issue in the coming Assembly
elections. Every effort is being made to emphasise that ``Hindu'',
``Jain'' and ``Sikh'' sentiments would have been irreparably hurt if the
``offending passages'' in the school history texts had not been deleted.

Brainstorming for the next budget

The Union budget for 2001-02 is about to peter out with most of its
projections turning awry. One more instance of a budget embodying a
coherent framework of sectoral initiatives but coming unstuck owing to a
patent failure of implementation! Mr. Yashwant Sinha's budget last
February was indeed hailed by India Inc. as a new flash of illumination in
a sable climate of economic slowdown but what the captains of industry had
certainly overlooked was the clear absence, in the budget package, of a
stimulus for mass consumption demand. In the event, the reinforcement of a
demand recession by investment stagnation proved an intractable obstacle
to a semblance of revival. The slowdown in the U.S. economy and the
post-September 11 disruptions in the global economic rhythm have only
added to the gloomy outlook for the Indian economy. It is against such a
demoralising backdrop that Mr. Sinha and his senior colleagues at the
Finance Ministry have to search for the leading contours of a new budget
exercise.

Defiant Meghalaya CM hopes to turn the tables
SHILLONG: Meghalaya Chief Minister E K Mawlong, whose ministry was reduced
to a minority two days ago, on Wednesday said he was not resigning, even
as the nascent People's Forum of Meghalaya prepared to formally stake
claim to form an alternative government on Thursday.[

India offers Nepal help in fight against Maoists
NEW DELHI: India has offered Nepal "whatever assistance is required" in
its fight against Maoists rebels, the foreign ministry said Wednesday.

Blair meets Fernandes, defence officials
NEW DELHI: As part of stepped up efforts to boost military to military
dialogue post international campaign against terrorism in Afghanistan, the
visiting US Commander-in-Chief of the Pacific Command Admiral Dennis Blair
on Wednesday held wide-ranging talks with Indian leaders and officials,
including Defence Minister George Fernandes.

Govt to invite price bids for VSNL, IBP by December-end
Disinvestment Minister Arun Shourie said Govt officials were working on a
plan to distribute VSNL's cash reserves worth Rs 40-45 bn through a
special dividend to shareholders before its privatisation.

Sensex ends flat on Wednesday; tech drops, old economy gains
Profit-taking pulled technology stocks lower on Wednesday for the second
straight day, while a switch to old economy and defensives propelled
cement and automobile shares higher. But blue-chip software exporter
Infosys Technologies was a surprise winner in technology, as the stock
rebounded to finish up 1.8 per cent at Rs 3,835, after falling 3.7 per
cent on Tuesday. The 30-share benchmark Bombay Sensitive index, Sensex
closed up 6.55 points 0.2 per cent at 3,294.12 points, but the broader
50-share S&P CNX Nifty index finished down 0.49 per cent at 1,070.80.

Rice processing company, LT Overseas, has tied up with two North American
companies for selling Indian basmati under their brand name, and expects
to export 40,000 tonnes of the commodity in the current crop year.
