EC ban on postings
Patna, Nov. 4. The Election Commission has put a blanket ban on the
transfer and posting of officers connected with revision of electoral
rolls for graduates and teachers constituencies of the Bihar Legislative
Council.

Vajpayee, Putin to deliberate on terrorism
Saint Petersburg, Nov. 4 The Prime Minister, Mr. Atal Behari Vajpayee,
arrived in this historic Russian city today to begin a three-nation
diplomatic voyage for a new strategic vision that might harmonise India's
foreign policy with the changing dynamics of the ongoing international
`campaign' against terrorism.

Accord on specific deals unlikely
New Delhi, Nov. 4. Although a review of various ongoing defence deals with
Russia will form an integral part of the Prime Minister, Mr. Atal Behari
Vajpayee's visit to Moscow, senior Defence Ministry officials said no
agreements or memoranda of understanding (MoU) are expected to be signed
for specific deals.

Massive build-up of Pak troops along border
JAMMU: Pakistan has moved about 60,000 troops 'very close' to the Line of
Control (LoC) and international border near the Akhnoor, Samba and
Pathankot areas, defence sources said Monday. Pakistan Air Force have also
engaged in air exercises near the LoC.

'Religious terrorism is the main danger'
St PETERSBURG: Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on Monday said
religious terrorism has emerged as the main danger to peace, stability and
civilised world order in the new century.

Free trade hasn't worked: Chomsky
NEW DELHI: The world has not prospered after liberalisation, according to
Noam Chomsky, linguistics professor at MIT. Chomsky said India could meet
the fate of countries that have experimented with liberalisation and ended
up increasing the divide between the 'haves' and 'havenots'.
Fernandes urges Rumsfeld to thaw military ties frozen since Cold War
"We discussed some specific issues on our mutual defence-related ties,
items that we need to acquire, collaborations that we can have," said
Fernandes.

Sensex declines as ITC, pharma scrips tumble
NEW DELHI: The local markets dipped under selling pressure as analysts'
predictions on the market -- taking a breather on Monday after rallying
about 17 per cent from its September low -- came true. The benchmark BSE
Sensex closed marginally down by 15.59 points at 3,037.01, while the
NSE-50 index was down 6.55 points at 991.05. Among the losers were ITC
(down 4.71 per cent), Cipla (down 2.31 per cent), Dr Reddy's (down 1.87
per cent), Ranbaxy (down 1.75 per cent), Castrol, BSES (down 3.33 per
cent), Telco and SBI were the other losers.

India's inflation rate falls to a new low
The year-on-year inflation as measured by the WPI fell to 2.72% during the
week ending October 20 from 3.04% in the previous week and 7.20% in the
corresponding period last year.
